Kitchens are moving outside, and they’re doing it in a big way. According to a study by the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA), outdoor kitchens are expected to remain a top design trend.

Manufacturers say the trend is moving away from cart-based grills to built-in grills for outdoor kitchens. While the 2015 HPBA consumer study shows just 10 per cent of U.S. grill owners currently have any outdoor kitchen, more than a third say they want to upgrade their outdoor spaces. The experts say that, in some areas of the country, built-in grilling islands have already become the standard and this trend is spreading throughout the U.S. and Canada.

“As people vacation or travel they are finding themselves using outdoor spaces more frequently. Whether it’s at a resort, an open air market or an outdoor dining area, people are more at ease and refreshed in an outdoor environment,” says Eugene Design Consultant Matt White. “Many have decided that they would like that same experience in the comfort of their own backyard.“

“According to the National Association of the Remodeling Industry, homeowners get a 130% return on their outdoor kitchen projects,” said Erin Gallagher, chief of insights for the Research Institute for Cooking & Kitchen Intelligence. “We feel that if that figure was more widely known, more homeowners would find money for these projects.“
